Maupassant is one of my favorite writers. There’s a well-known
anecdote about him: he was strongly opposed to the construction of
the Eiffel Tower. Yet after it was built, he often had lunch at the
restaurant inside it. When asked about this contradiction, he used

I like this story because it feels honest in a quiet way. We don’t
always fit neatly with our own opinions or first impressions of
ourselves, and it can be hard to describe who we are while still in
the middle of becoming it.
